Empowering Relationships
The purpose of this short essay is to inform the community of one specific area we advocate and believe in at the American Relationship Enrichment Institute. The role of women in marriages has dramatically changed over the past 50 years. Whether women choose to be in a 1950s traditional marriage, a 1980s double income no kids’ marriage (DINKs), or a 21st century marriage where many roles are performed by both partners, it is critical to address and empower all women within their marriages. At AREI we teach and empower women to have a voice as well as teach and demonstrate to their husbands the value of their wives talking openly and honestly.
We have learned through current research that when women have a voice and are actually able to influence their spouses the marriages are much stronger and healthier. We find it to be equally important to work with the husbands as they are not as easily influenced by their spouses as their spouses are by them. As an expert in the Relationship arena, Bob Sugar LPC, CRET (Certified Relationship Enhancement® Therapist) talks about many couples he has worked with where women are fearful of expressing themselves and have years of stored up anger and resentment. In addition, he has witnessed countless couples who engage in silent despair with an inability to confront issues and problems intelligently.
This he says is driven by the FEAR of not having the ability to regulate the emotional climate when attempts are made to address those issues and problems. AREIs Firm Foundations® program works with engaged and recently married couples to teach and empower the women and the men to have equal voice and emotional intelligence in their communication. The result is emotional safety and regulation allowing for respectful and successful interactions.
The couples learn a set of skills and techniques that they then have for life. At AREI the Effective Communication program and the Couples Connection Challenge® program are both geared towards the promotion of Relational Empowerment. Partners have a safe place to learn and explore techniques and skills that allow for equal voice and unwavering respect and integrity towards their relationship.
